Geomagnetic Observatory Niemegk (NGK)

Description
The Adolf-Schmidt-Observatory for Geomagnetism in Niemegk is operated by Section 2.3, Geomagnetism of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences since 1992. The section also operates additional magnetic observatories in international cooperation. The main objective of the observatory is to continuously measure the geomagnetic field, in order to study the dynamics of the Earth´s magnetic field and its interactions with System Earth. Since 1930, the observatory is located 50 km SW of Potsdam, ensuring the continuation of the measurements started in Potsdam in 1887. The Niemegk observatory is member of the INTERMAGNET program and contributes data to: developing global geomagnetic field models (International Geomagnetic Reference Field, World Magnetic Model), developing regional modelsmonitoring of interplanetary space (Solar Influences Data Analysis Center, International Service of Geomagnetic Indices), developing regional models monitoring of interplanetary space (Solar Influences Data Analysis Center, International Service of Geomagnetic Indices), and databases of observatory data.
